GE Readies New Thin-Film Solar Panels

GE just announced that it is readying a new solar thin-film panel, system, and inverter product with a goal to provide the lowest cost of electricity in the market.  The multinational corporation is backing a cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film product and recently topped 15% efficiencies on commercial glass, according to a press release.

SolarFlora: Sleek Beautiful Green Power

This solar flower -- slightly more literal that these solar sunflowers in Austin -- has been getting more and more attention these days.  SolarFlora, designed by Nectar Design, is now on tour at events and locations in California.  The 13-foot flower is made with aircraft aluminum, weighs 300 pounds, and is large enough to hold up to four solar panels.  Depending on conditions, SolarFlora can generate up to 600 watt-hours per day.

Easy Plug-In Solar from Clarian Power

Clarian Power, a start up from Seattle, is on a mission to help homeowners everywhere generate energy from renewable energy.  The company developed a proprietary power module that plugs into an existing outlet.  In other words, their Sunfish solar product, which is slated for retail availability next year, installs without a dedicated electrical panel and does not require contractors, installers, or additional wires.

Solar Powered Homes in Sunny SoCal

There's a massive residential community under construction in Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles County.  Comstock Homes, developer of The Villages at Heritage Springs, says it's the largest solar powered community in the nation, which is partially why it's so interesting.  These California homes come with roof-integrated Sunpower Suntiles, and they're built for efficiency, too.

Flexible Lightweight Solar by SoloPower

Today SoloPower announced the launch of its inaugural thin-film, CIGS-based solar product called SFX1-i.  The company says SFX1-i is lightweight and flexible, while other outlets, such as Greentech Media, report that the modules have an efficiency of 10.5 to 11 percent.

Solar Trees Grow on Parking Structures

A couple years ago we mentioned that the University of California San Diego was in the process of installing rows of Solar Trees on top of the Hopkins and Gilman Parking Structures.  These parking lots, and the company that makes them, Envision Solar, received a mention by the NY Times recently.  That's because Envision Solar has a novel approach -- putting solar and shade in otherwise unused and unshaded parking lots.

Wavy Solar Integrated Studio House

Lamboo, Inc., a maker of architectural bamboo products out of Illinois, has this concept studio featured on their website.  Lamboo Studio is made with several different Lamboo products, including bamboo interior paneling, custom bamboo furniture, bamboo content in windows and doors, and laminated structural bamboo in the roof and floor.  Illustrating several uses for these bamboo products, the 304 square-foot tiny home has a wavy aluminum roof with integrated Uni-Solar panels and a composting toilet for off-grid living.

New Portable Solar Powered Carports

Seems like a rare situation when a person will need both a carport and solar panels on top of the carport -- as opposed to on the house or somewhere else.  But assuming the stars align and you're in the market, Phat Energy wants to be there to help you out.  The company just unveiled their prototype PHATport 350 in the outdoor section of Dwell on Design 2010.
