RUBBiSH: Old Tires Now a Sink Surface

Minarc recently took an R+D Award from Architect Magazine for this sink made of recycled rubber tires.  RUBBiSH, as it's called, is made through a process whereby tires are melted, stripped of particulates and impurities, and stretched in a lightweight layer over a sub-material to create the surface. RUBBiSH is available in a 1/8 inch sheet of rubber or in a framed option where the product is held in place by two sheets of aluminum at the countertop edge.

Dune Wall Tiles by urbanproduct

Stephen Lindsay has been working on the launch of these fascinating tiles made of walnut, plaster, and concrete. Dune tiles are eight inches square and protrude about two inches from the wall surface. They’re distributed through urbanproduct (though the company is looking for U.S. distributors) and made with natural pigments and a soya-based finish.

Stylish Eco Home Office from West Elm

Earlier this week, West Elm introduced the Pratt Home Office collection of eco-friendly and affordable furniture.  Created in collaboration with The Pratt Institute, the five-piece set includes items made with FSC certified wood, non-toxic glues, water-based stains, and powder-coated steel that can be recycled.  There's also a clever LED task lamp in the mix and, although some pieces are on sale now, prices range from $99 to $299.

Helios House Gets LEED Gold in Bend

If you've been to Bend, Oregon -- smack dab in the center of the state on the dry side -- you know it's a cool place with a ton of outdoor, vacation, and eco-friendly options.  That's why the owners of this vacation rental, Helios NW Eco-House, decided to go ahead and earn LEED Gold certification. It's actually, according to the owners' research, the first vacation rental home in the state to receive this level of certification.

Haptik Blends Luxury and Sustainability

In response to a design challenge issued by the USGBC, WATG and IDEO created "Haptik," a sustainable hotel suite that blends sustainability and luxury in a high-tech environment.  The suite, named after a Greek term for experiencing interactions based on touch, won the challenge and was built as a model at HD Expo 2010 last month.  Courtesy of WATG, take a look inside:

Modular Recycled Ditto from 3form

3form, an innovative maker of recycled content materials, recently introduced a new modular product called Ditto.  The product, winner of the Best of Competition Award at the HD Expo 2010, is made with hundreds of cross-shaped pieces that combine to form a partition, wall, or ceiling feature.  Ditto is made with Varia Ecoresin, a 40% pre-consumer recycled content material, and can be customized using an online configurator and several different colors.

Plant Walls for Vibrant Green Spaces

The folks at Plant Solutions installed this vibrant living wall in a conference room of their Scottsdale office. The TerraScreen Living Wall is made with two 4'x4' panels, which are made with a black, powder-coated, galvanized steel wire, and brackets that attach to the wall. The panels protrude a little less than five inches from the wall.

In an effort to find truly sustainable and beautiful commercial interior design, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Interiors & Sources magazine partnered to create the Bloom Awards.  Now in its second year, the winners have just been released and will be recognized at NeoCon next month.  These five products, according to a press release, successfully marry innovation and sustainability in their category.

Clean Green Kitchen Rehab in Twin Cities

Joshua Foss, principal of Thrive Design Studio and ambassador for the Living Building Challenge, recently completed this clean and contemporary kitchen renovation in a home near Theodore Wirth Park.  Foss and the owners went with a color palette that, in the end, resembles nature in many ways.  The light blue walls resemble water or clear blue skies, the steel and aluminum mimic smooth stones, and the cabinets and floors ground the space with wood.

Update: 111 Navy Chair in Six Colors

A couple weeks ago, we mentioned a two-year collaboration between Coca-Cola and Emeco to produce the 111 Navy Chair.  It'll be unveiled this week in Milan and sales begin in June here in the states through Design Within Reach.  The L.A. Times reports that it'll cost about $230, making it one of the most accessible options available to fans of the 1940s design.
