Rue-evans-passive-house-oregon-exterior

This is the first Passive House certified new house on the West Coast (joining a California remodel in the Pacific Coast certification club).  The traditional home, located in Salem, Oregon, was built with a number of green materials by Bilyeu Homes, Inc.  It's also airtight, ultra-insulated, and very energy efficient -- as are other Passive Houses we've discussed in Utah, Kansas, and Louisiana.

Innovative Passive House in Lafayette

204-house-passive-house-la

This is the first certified Passive House in the “South,” and it’s located in Lafayette, Louisiana. What’s interesting about the home – other than that it illustrates the use of the Passive House standard in a hot and humid climate – is the fact that the low-energy home, with the help of rooftop solar laminates, is a net zero energy prototype for the future.

Light Bulbs Get a New Nutrition Label

Lighting-facts-two-panel-labels

A couple weeks ago, the FTC released a final rule relating to new labels for light bulb packaging.  The labels are designed to help consumers understand the differences between traditional incandescent, compact fluorescent (CFL), and light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. They're also supposed to help consumers save money and energy, which is, after all, the ultimate goal with new technology.

Update: Living in an Active House

Active-house-denmark-dwell

Last year we mentioned this ultra-green Active House in Denmark.  Even with all the windows, it's paradoxically efficient enough to capture more energy than the occupants need for heat and power.  In fact, over 40 years, the idea is that surplus energy will offset the energy required for construction and materials, too.  It's a step beyond zero net energy or even Passive House

Smart Windows that Save Big Energy

Ravenbrick-window-comparison

This startup company, RavenBrick, was profiled by the New York Times for its simple and smart window technology.  It's a window like nothing else on the market.  Using patented and patent pending technology, RavenWindow has a reflective film that's keyed to the outside temperature.  When warm, the film reflects light to reduce solar heat gain.  Conversely, when cool, the film becomes transparent to allow a comfortable amount of heat gain.
